Committee Summary:

The COI has convened two groups to oversee and advise evaluation efforts. The Evaluation Advisory Group was established in 2007 as a way to convene local research experts and academicians to advise the COI on potential evaluation methods and approaches. The work of this group puts emphasis on the development of specific indicators to allow communities and the COI to gauge progress toward development of healthy community environments and supportive policy. In 2009, the Core Evaluation Committee was formed with the purpose of recommending and facilitating specific strategies for the overall evaluation of the COI. The evaluation plan that these two groups have been working to create will strengthen the capacity for research and evaluation of efforts to create healthier communities throughout San Diego County.

Strategies:

The evaluation plan is organized around measurement of multiple levels of outcomes of San Diego County Childhood Obesity efforts, including:

  • Direct outcome measures of body mass index (BMI);
  • Proximal outcomes of changes in environment, policy, and behavior change;
  • Process evaluation measurements focused on domain activities and outputs.

Quick Facts

  • Overweight children are far more likely to be obese as adults (California Center of Public Health Advocacy, 2009)
  • If today’s current trend continues, it is anticipated that 1 in 3 children born in the US after the year 2000 will develop type 2 diabetes (American Diabetes Association, 2009).
  • Walking and biking have decreased more than 40% during the past 3 decades, partly because of unsafe routes and poor walking conditions (Active Living Research, 2009).
